Nancy Pelosi not a college football fan?

Posted by ZA on January 7, 2009

Chalk this up under the “Don’t they all have more important things to do” category.  Like work on the economy or keep our government moving in positive directions.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi denied the request by Florida Republican Cliff Stearns to reschedule a Congressional vote so House members could attend the BCS Championship Game.  Stearns wrote on behalf of reps from Florida and Oklahoma that wanted to attend the game in Florida, which would make them absent for scheduled votes on Thursday and Friday.

Looks like you’ll just have to watch the game on TV, Cliff.  Sorry that duty to your country got in the way of your plans for the game, but that’s the way it works when you are elected to Congress.

I wonder if Pelosi would have rescheduled the votes if USC had been in the BCS Championship?

Utah Attorney General to fix BCS system

Posted by ZA on January 6, 2009

I’m fan of anyone that helps to get us to a college football playoff, but doesn’t the Utah Attorney General have more important issues to deal with than this one?  But I digress…

The Utah AG, Mark Shurtlett, told the Deseret News that he is “considering launching an investigation into college football’s Bowl Championship Series” because his Utes are not going to be crowned college football’s national champion.  Shurtlett said the BCS is “an unfair system” and is considering an antitrust case to break the monopoly they have on college football.

Wow, go Mark!  Maybe this is the kind of pressure we to land a playoff.  Or maybe it’s a political move on Shurlett’s part just to win favor with his homestate voters.  He started down the antitrust path when the Utes made the Fiesta Bowl in 2004, but subsequently dropped the case.

Whatever the motivates for the Utah AG, at least it has people talking about what a farce the BCS system is.  Just imagine how glorious a college football playoff would have been in 2008:

2008 College Football Playoff (projected):
(1) Oklahoma Sooners vs. (8) Ohio State Buckeyes
(2) Florida Gators vs. (7) Utah Utes
(3) Texas Longhorns vs. (6) Penn State Nittany Lions
(4) USC Trojans vs. (5) Alabama Crimson Tide

That could have led to Oklahoma’s offense versus USC’s defense in one semifinal.  With perhaps Texas playing Florida (sorry Utes) in the other semi.  The possibilities for a National Championship Game are good enough to make any college football fan drool.  Plus it would have settled it on the field.  It Utah is the best squad (which I don’t believe is true) then they would beat the likes of Florida, Texas and USC on their way to the crown.

Barrack Obama are you listening?  We need a college football playoff.

[Sidenote: Does anyone else find it odd that Salt Lake City has a major newspaper named the Deseret News?  Not "Desert", but "Deseret" which apparently has meaning in Utah.  I had to double-check to make sure I wasn't getting farked by that article.]

2008 BCS Bowl Game Selection Show

Posted by ZA on December 7, 2008

All of the BCS drama will finally come to a close on Sunday when the 2008-2009 bowl game schedule is announced.  At 7PM central on December 7th Fox’s BCS  Bowl Game Selection Show will reveal all of the matchups and preview the games.  Here is my take on which teams will be playing in the main BCS bowl games.

2008-2009 BCS Bowl Game matchup predictions:

BCS National Championship Game

Florida Gators vs Oklahoma Sooners
* The Sooners lucked out in passing my Longhorns, and now get the chance to play for the National Championship.  There will be a lot of points scored in this game.

Fiesta Bowl
Ohio Stata Buckeyes vs Utah Utes
* A lot of smoke about Fox wanting a #3 vs #4 matchup in Sugar Bowl, and getting Fiesta to take Utah.  I’m believing the rumors, and thinking that Ohio State will win based on the strength of their defense.

Orange Bowl

Cincinnati Bearcats vs Virginia Tech Hokies
* Looking for the lowest rated BCS bowl game?  Here it is.

Sugar Bowl
Alabama Crimson Tide vs Texas Longhorns
* Fox wants to create another strong matchup and this definitely qualifies.  Call this the ‘we deserve to be in the National Championship conversation’ bowl.  Buy Sugar Bowl Tickets.

Rose Bowl

Penn State Nittany Lions vs USC Trojans
* Aside from the National Championship Game, this is the only other ‘sure thing’ at this moment.  Tough game for PSU.

Poking fun at College Football’s BCS

Posted by ZA on December 4, 2008

This was emailed to me today by a couple of people.  Not sure who the original author is that deserves the credit, but I thought it was funny enough to post.  And keep in-mind this is poking fun of the BCS, not making light of WWII.

BCS DECLARES GERMANY WINNER OF WORLD WAR II
US Ranked 4th

After determining the Big-12 championship game participants the BCS computers were put to work on other major contests and today the BCS declared Germany to be the winner of World War II.

“Germany put together an incredible number of victories beginning with the annexation of Austria and the Sudetenland and continuing on into conference play with defeats of Poland, France, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium and the Netherlands. Their only losses came against the US and Russia; however considering their entire body of work–including an incredibly tough Strength of Schedule–our computers deemed them worthy of the #1 ranking.”

Questioned about the #4 ranking of the United States the BCS commissioner stated “The US only had two major victories– Japan and Germany . The computer models, unlike humans, aren’t influenced by head-to-head contests–they consider each contest to be only a single, equally-weighted event.”

German Chancellor Adolph Hitler said “Yes, we lost to the US ; but we defeated #2 ranked France in only 6 weeks.” Herr Hitler has been criticized for seeking dramatic victories to earn ‘style points’ to enhance Germany’s rankings. Hitler protested “Our contest with Poland was in doubt until the final day and the conditions in Norway were incredibly challenging and demanded the application of additional forces.”

The French ranking has also come under scrutiny. The BCS commented “France had a single loss against Germany and following a preseason #1 ranking they only fell to #2.”

Japan was ranked #3 with victories including Manchuria, Borneo and the Philippines.

Why can’t we have a college football playoff?

Posted by ZA on November 25, 2008

“It’s too simplistic to say, ‘Let’s have a playoff.’ We have far too many considerations in college athletics than just the entertainment value.” – Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe quoted on “Big 12 Showcase” for Fox Sports Southwest.

What are the reasons we can’t start a college football playoff? No really, I’m curious to know. I’ve heard it will add too many games to the season, student-athletes will miss too much class time, fans won’t have time to travel to the games, or they won’t have the money to travel to multiple games. I have heard that teams will only schedule cupcakes in order to make it into a playoff and that a playoff would ruin the regular season. What I haven’t heard yet is anything that holds water. I haven’t heard one truly good reason not to have a playoff. I certainly have not heard how the bowl games are better than a college football playoff at deciding a national champion.

The reason we don’t have a college football playoff is the “old boys network” who run the bowl games are still making a lot of money. And those fellas have a lot of influence in the college football world. They have the Conference Commissioners and University Presidents on speed dial, and no change is going to happen easily without them on-board. And they have no incentive to change, because they are doing just fine with the current bowl system.

Doing just fine. Rather than evolve and create something truly notable, the big cigars that run the bowl games are content to sit on top of innovation and count their money. The change won’t occur until enough of that network is put out to pasture and a new breed comes in who’s not afraid to change.   The good news is that I think that change is coming to college football very soon.

So help me figure this out.  Give me a few reasons why the bowl system trumps a playoff.

PROS for a College Football Playoff:
1. A true National Champion is crowned on the field.
2. All of the top teams get to compete for a National Championship.
3. College Football will make a ton of money.
4. Polls and ratings will no longer decide which teams play in the Championship Game.

CONS for a College Football Playoff:
1. Student-Athletes will miss too much class time.
2. The regular-season will be made meaningless.
3. The season will be too long.
4. Fans will not be able to travel on short-notice in a playoff format.
5. The current bowl system will die.

ESPN deal means College Football playoff is coming

Posted by ZA on November 19, 2008

If you are a huge college football fan (like me) who has been waiting for college football to institute a playoff system, then today is your lucky day. Because the first domino has fallen in what will be a series of events that lead to a college football playoff.

The BCS and ESPN inked a deal to give ESPN television, radio and internet rights to four major BCS Championship games from 2011 to 2014. ESPN will now broadcast the Fiesta Bowl, Orange Bowl, Sugar Bowl, and BCS National Championship Game. The Rose Bowl is the fifth BCS game, and already locked into a deal with ESPN’s parent network, ABC Sports.  ESPN is paying $125 million per year for the rights, which is 50% higher than what Fox is currently paying.

ESPN’s access to 98 million homes is slightly less than network television, but it is their commitment to total sports programming that will be the catalyst.  The old boys network that controls bowl games is starting to get long in the tooth anyway, but with ESPN pushing forward changes are going to happen quickly.

Here are the steps that I said must happen for ESPN to get us to college football playoff:
1. ESPN lands BCS television rights. DONE
2. BCS adds “plus one” championship game. PENDING
3. BCS expands to add new bowl games including Cotton Bowl. PENDING
4. BCS develops an 8-team playoff to decide the National Championship. PENDING

The accelerator in this deal in ESPN, although it doesn’t hurt that President Obama is going to “throw (his) weight around a little” behind the idea of a college football playoff. ESPN is a year-round sports network, so they can sell advertising behind programming developed to highlight a college football playoff. ESPN will carry the torch to get a playoff, because they stand to benefit the most from it. Fox never had that incentive, because their sports programming was just one facet of their lineup.

In addition being the creator and driving force behind a college football playoff earns ESPN another place in history of sports. They helped create what will become the greatest sporting event on the country, surpassing the Superbowl in popularity and television viewership. Because the combined viewers of a playoff will be more than one game Superbowl, or any other sporting event in US soil.

Plus, you don’t think that ESPN wants what CBS has? March Madness is the biggest sporting event on television dial each year, and ESPN gets stuck with the NIT (aka: the second banana). This is their chance to create, market and profit from a marquee sports event. And the first domino just fell…a college football playoff is on the way.

Vitaminwater taking over college sports

Posted by ZA on November 17, 2008

If you feel the need to revive at the NCAA Final Four, you’ll now be able to.  That’s because Coca-Cola is replacing their top water brand, Dasani, with their top “lifestyle beverage”, Vitaminwater, in their sponsorship deal with NCAA.  All 88 NCAA championships will have Vitaminwater’s “Revive” flavored water branded on their water coolers, sideline cups and squeeze bottles.

BCS moving to ESPN/ABC to start a playoff

Posted by ZA on November 3, 2008

It appears the days are numbered for Fox’s rights to broadcast college football’s top bowl games.  The Bowl Championship Series (BCS) is asking $800 million dollars for Fox to retain the rights to broadcast the four BCS games; the BCS Championship Game, Fiesta Bowl, Orange Bowl and Sugar Bowl.  ABC already holds the broadcast rights for the 5th BCS game, the Rose Bowl.

The BCS is asking Fox to up their annual spend from the current $82 million per year up to $132 million per year.  The theory behind that dramatic increase is that doing so will cause Fox to balk, which will then allow the BCS to solicit bids on the open market from other networks.  The favorite to win a bidding war on the open market?  ABC/ESPN who would then hold the rights to all of the major bowl games, and have the ability to play some on ABC and others on their cable sports juggernaut, ESPN.

The reason the BCS will select ABC/ESPN over Fox?  Money.  Not only will they be able to bid the two entities against each other to get a richer deal, but ultimately landing with ABC/ESPN increases their exposure.  ESPN is a dedicated sports network that will continually run promotions for the BCS series throughout the year on in-game programming and Sportscenter.  ABC also already owns the rights to broadcast college games, which Fox does not.  The increased exposure for the BCS will add up to much larger sponsorship dollars.

Once that happens I expect the next major change for the BCS to be the announcement of a college football playoff.  One that will initially start as a plus one game after the four major bowls are played (Fiesta, Orange, Rose & Sugar), but will eventually expand.  The expansion will add the Cotton Bowl, played at Jerry Jone’s new stadium, as the 6th BCS bowl game.  The expanded BCS will now be able to seed the top 8 teams entering the bowl season and have them play a winner take all knockout format.

The reason the BCS will morph into a playoff format?  Again, money.  The thing holding back a playoff format right now is the old guard from the bowl games.  They are concerned their games will be made irrelevant by a playoff and still have enough power to stand in the way of that progress.  But that old guard won’t always have that much clout and eventually the system will change because a playoff series in college football is what the fans want.  And in this case that “want” translates into lots of dollars for the BCS.  Higher TV ratings, more tickets sold and bigger sponsorship opportunities are what will ultimately get us a college football playoff.

The Pickens Plan for Oklahoma State football

Posted by ZA on October 21, 2008

Billionaire T. Boone Pickens is finally getting a proper return on his investment.
No, not his oil investments – he’s already made billions of those.
And not his green energy wind farm investments – he’s still waiting for those to mature.

He’s getting ROI from the $200,000,000.00 he pledged to his alma mater, Oklahoma State University.  The $200 million was provided a few years ago to pull the Cowboys athletic programs from middle of the pack to the top shelf.  This season the money is finally working for the OSU football team, who knocked off Missouri and have climbed to 7th in the latest AP poll.

T. Boone said, “Now I’m getting my money’s worth.”

Next step for T. Boone’s Cowboys is their biggest game of the year so far against the #1 ranked Texas Longhorns in Austin.  A few weeks after that the Cowboys will face their hated in-state rival, the Oklahoma Sooners, in the Bedlam Series.  Both of those games will be extremely difficult for OSU to win, but if they do then Pickens will really be getting ROI.

Pickens said, “The two biggest games for me are the OU game and the Texas game.  I’d like to beat both of ‘em.  That’d be a real thrill for me.”

Are you listening Coach Mike Gundy and Athletic Director Mike Holder?  T. Boone wants a couple of victorious.  Heck, if you do it – it might earn your programs a few million extra.

Watch SEC football live from your computer

Posted by ZA on September 12, 2008

As part of the record television contract that the SEC signed with CBS Sports last month, SEC football games will be simulcast live online.  Viewers can watch the SEC games for free at CBSSports.com.  The ads shown during the live simulcast will be the same ads shown to television viewers of that SEC game.  There will be a pre-roll video ad spot when a viewer first logs on to watch the game.

The current deal with CBS is just to stream 17 football games per year, not every SEC football game.  I imagine that they will expand this in future years to cover more SEC games.  Eventually you will be able to see SEC game being played, although the quality of the broadcasts will be poorer on those where a CBS television crew isn’t doing an on-site broadcast.  They will also have to jump through some hoops to make sure that no games broadcast on the internet have permission from ESPN and other rights holders, who broadcast SEC games.
